The government’s role as a health care insurer.

In the past decade there has been increasing discussion of the government’s role as a health care insurer. Should the government play more of a significant role as an insurer? Currently the largest insurance type in the U.S. is employer based. Is there a real difference between members of society being at the mercy of their employer for coverage instead of at the mercy of the government?
