Aggressive behavior
Background For the past few weeks you have been working with Mr.. Smith, a single father who was recently awarded custody of his five-year-old daughter Peggy. Up until three months ago, Peggy lived across the country with her mother and Mr. Smith only saw her on holidays. Peggy’s kindergarten teacher was very concerned as Peggy was exhibiting aggressive behavior, complained of hunger, and came to school in dirty clothes. You have already reached out to Mr. Smith to encourage him to visit XYZ Community Center to obtain food and clothes for Peggy. You invited him to attend an open house and shared resources to enhance his parenting skills. Mr. Smith has followed your suggestions and now both he and Peggy are making great strides. Your next step in supporting the Smith family is to schedule a home visit. However, you learned that Mr. Smith is very apprehensive about having you visit his home. Motivation and encouragement are important tools to use when supporting children’s families.
