Benefits of leisure
Gini (2005) writes: “My thesis is a simple one. Even if we love our jobs and find creativity, success and pleasure in our work, we also crave, desire and need not to work. No matter what we do to earn a living, we all seek the benefits of leisure, lassitude and inertia. We all need to play more in our lives” (p. 2). Alboher (2008) argues that improving our relationship with leisure can also reduce job stress, improve work-related skills, increase tolerance and understanding and enhance decision-making.
Writing Prompt: Gini and Alboher make a good case for “why” we need leisure, recreation and play in our lives. What do you think about their argument? Are you convinced that we actually “need” leisure, especially given the challenging times of the past two years? Why or why not? In writing your response to the prompt, please discuss what leisure and recreation mean to you and how you differentiate between these two different concepts. In your response, please also refer to Pastimes and other readings, class discussion and/or information from PowerPoints. Your initial post must be at least 250 words.
