Be sure to use key terms to discuss cognitive skills that children develop during this period (e.g. classification, seriation, etc).

Discuss the impact of stress on kids and how it might reveal itself in middle childhood.  How do children’s responses to stress vary? What factors promote resilience in children and allow for favorable adjustment following stress?

 

Identify and describe Baumrind’s four parenting ‘styles’ and discuss the limitations of this model.

Describe cultural variations in how parents discipline young children and explain how cultural context can influence children’s responses to discipline.

Be sure to differentiate between corporal punishment and other forms of discipline.  How might toxic stress affect parenting, and what can parents do to manage the impact of stress?
