Cervical cancer or cancer of the throat
There are many cancers that have been shown to have a mutated form of the protein p53 within
them. In addition, it is known that some viruses can cause cancer, and in the case of human
papillomavirus, it can cause cervical cancer or cancer of the throat. This virus has been shown to
make a protein called “E6” that binds to p53 causing cancer. What do you think E6 does to p53
leading to cancer? Does it inhibit or activate it and why do you think so?
