Nationalism fit into Canada’s identity

How should nationalism fit into Canada’s identity? Citizen III 4% “Canada is a complicated country: numerous religions, three founding nations and lots of newcomers. Nationalism is strong in many regions; in other places there is a ‘me-first’attitude, economic frustration and separatism. We need to find ways to make all citizens more proud of being Canadians.

We need to do a much better job of teaching and promoting Canadian na tionaiism. ” "Every major question Canada faces seems to boil down to a combination of religion, language and culture. I ‘m not sure how we manage to stay together, but somehow we do.

Doing more to promote Canadian nationalism would be a mistake. Nationalism is a force for division in Canada, not a force for unity. There are many nationalisms in Canada besides Canadian nationalism and we must learn to accept this fact.

” “If you are in another part of the world, the fastest way to discover if a person is Canadian is to ask them ‘where in America are you from ?’If Canadian nationalism doesn’t exist, why do Canadians get so upset when someone suggests that Canadians and Americans are the same?

Canadian nationalism is there, but we keep it below the surface most of the time. It’s probably best to keep it hidden there until we really need it.”
