Analyze how culture affects communication

Analyze how culture affects communication by connecting the communication principles you learn to the real world. Consider a recent conversation with a friend, relative, or acquaintance that was in person or electronically. In what ways did your culture and the other person’s culture affect the communication? Use examples of your personal knowledge of culture and communication competence to support your position.

Write a two- to three-page paper, not counting the title page and the references page, that summarizes how culture affected your communication experience. While including cited support for terms and concepts is important, the bulk of this paper should be in your own words about your own experience.
If, for any reason, you are not comfortable discussing your personal cultural background, you can choose communication between two characters from a scene in a movie or television show. How did the culture of the characters affect the communication in that scene?

Engaging in self-disclosure

In this discussion, you will analyze self-disclosure and your experiences with it. Share a specific time when you engaged in self-disclosure in your professional or personal life. What goals did you have in doing so? How was your self-disclosure received? Did you regret the decision to self-disclose? What were the specific risks and potential rewards of engaging in self-disclosure? How has your self-disclosure behavior changed over time? What event or events led to changes?

Identify and explain the concepts of self-awareness

Identify and explain the concepts of self-awareness, self-esteem, and perception in order to gain a better understanding of each as well as increase your perceptual accuracy.

Instructions:

  1. Review concepts related to self-awareness, including The Four Selves, that you explored in the textbook and in the learning activities.
  2. Consider the fact that an individual’s self-awareness combined with an individual’s perception of a situation often varies and differences in both can influence how a communication interaction transpires.
  3. Reflect on a time when the perception of others — the impression you made — was particularly important (your first date with someone, the first day of college, the first day on a new job, etc.).
  4. What kind of impression did you want to make and why? What did you do to ensure others perceived you how you wanted them to? Were your attempts effective?
  5. Write a two- to three-page paper, not counting the title page and the references page, that describes the event, differences of perception, and defines the concepts of self-awareness and perception.
  6. While including cited terms and concepts is important, the bulk of this paper should be about your own experience.

Suggested structure: Introduction paragraph that includes a main idea, multiple body paragraphs with evidence and support, and conclusion paragraph that wraps it up.

Types of listening styles

For this assignment, you will identify, explain, and provide examples of the four types of listening styles discussed in the textbook.

Instructions:

  1. Review the four types of listening styles in the textbook and in the learning activities assigned for this module.
  2. Reflect on your own listening style/styles.
  3. Describe a time at work, at school, or in your personal life when your listening style proved effective, or ineffective. How could you have altered your style for that situation to change the outcome?
  4. Write a two- to three-page descriptive essay, not counting the title page and the references page, that defines each of the listening styles and addresses the questions above.
  5. While including cited terms and concepts are important, the bulk of this essay should relate to your own experience.

Suggested structure: Introduction paragraph that includes a main idea, multiple body paragraphs with evidence and support, and a conclusion paragraph that wraps it up.

Discuss the context and the exceptional communication quality

Gender and Message Meanings: In this discussion, you will explore gender speech patterns as well as gender differences in politeness. Reflect on a time you (or someone you know) were conversing with a friend or loved one when you noticed a positive communication that was an exception to the instrumental/relational gender norm as discussed in DeVito.

Discuss the context and the exceptional communication quality that this communicator demonstrated. What would have been the gender norm? How did this communication outside of gender norms make others feel?  What contextual factors facilitated this positive communication? What are the potential obstacles of either gender as it relates to this communication quality?

You may also want to reflect on what you could have done differently or what you learnt from the experience.

Self-reflection is the key to self-awareness: it allows us to look neutrally at our thoughts, feelings, emotions, and actions. Through this practice, we are able to look at ourselves with newfound interest and curiosity.

Explain the three ethics of moral reasoning

Explain the three ethics of moral reasoning: autonomy, community, and divinity through a cultural lens. You can focus on a culture, subculture or compare two.

What are the cultural differences in moral reasoning?
CLASS. Cultural differences in moral reasoning are driven by various influences — history, leadership, religious belief, experiences with peace and warfare, available resources and the strategies for extracting and distributing those resources. These cultural differences are not limited to the scale of nations.
What are the 3 types of ethics and explain each?
The three major types of ethics are deontological, teleological and virtue-based. In deontological ethics, you must simply know what your duties are and what the rules are that regulate them, then you must do those duties in order to be moral. In teleological ethics, being moral is about cause-and-effect

Psychological health disparity

Describe a psychological health disparity among different ethnic minority groups.  You can opt to examine a psychological disparity based on gender, sexuality, age, or nationality.      Provide one example from the textbook here.  Don’t just say it is an example, tell the reader how your example illustrates a psychological health disparity by discussing how the prevalence of the disorder differs among groups, how the consequences of the disorder may differ among groups,  or how access to treatment differs among groups.

B.  Provide a second example from any of the supplementary sources listed above. Again, don’t just say it is an example, tell the reader how your example illustrates a psychological health disparity by discussing how the prevalence of the disorder differs among groups, how the consequences of the disorder may differ among groups,  or how access to treatment differs among groups.  For example, children whose parents are seeking asylum are experiencing nationality/immigrant status as a system of inequality whereby they are automatically separated at the southern U.S. border. What are the psychological consequences on children or entire families of this separation? From where do you derive your answers?
