Today, since there was no patients in the pediatrics unit floating to the Emergency department, was a fun yet busy day and great experience. Female 16 years old admitted for overdose of Tylenol p.m. her diagnosis is depression she stated that “ I was trying to get away from the stuff in my head.”
The patient was very emotional often on cried. Ativan 1 mg was given for anxiety. All vital signs were normal the patient was alert and oriented times four she knew where she was she was able to answer all questions all her lab results were normal. Vital signs normal.
Upon doing an assessment on the patient I found no abnormalities aside from noticing the patient has a deformity which was missing her left hand. I asked the mother who was present at the time what happen she stated that she was born that way.
I noticed the patient was trying to hide it most of the time. The RN I was working with did not realize herself that the patient was missing her hand. I felt that the patient felt she needed to hide it. My nurse I was shadowing was nice to me and told me I was a big help.
She wasn’t very nice with this 16-year-old patient and was not sympathetic at all which in my opinion wasn’t right especially when a patient comes in for attempt of suicide and is also have a deformity of her missing hand. I was accommodating to the patient as much as I could. She did eventually warm up to me.
Requirement:
Based on our experience at clinical. It’s a pediatrics rotation. We do hours once a week at a hospital in the pediatrics unit and we’re usually assigned a patient this time the pediatrics unit had just one patient so most of us spent the day in the emergency room and picked our own patient for the day. So the patient I picked was a 16-year-old female.
