The causes of psychological distress

Should abnormal psychology continue its focus on identifying the causes of psychological distress, classifying different symptoms, and seeking effective treatment to reduce these symptoms, or should the field focus on improving knowledge of what goes right in happy people and trying to improve these techniques in the general population?

If you were to start a society from scratch and wanted to improve the lives of its members, would you focus on identifying what goes right in people or on identifying the abnormal? How would approaches to treatment and intervention differ if society were to focus on positive psychology instead of abnormal psychology? Defend your position by replying to at least two of your peers.

Psychological health disparity

Describe a psychological health disparity among different ethnic minority groups.  You can opt to examine a psychological disparity based on gender, sexuality, age, or nationality.      Provide one example from the textbook here.  Don’t just say it is an example, tell the reader how your example illustrates a psychological health disparity by discussing how the prevalence of the disorder differs among groups, how the consequences of the disorder may differ among groups,  or how access to treatment differs among groups.

B.  Provide a second example from any of the supplementary sources listed above. Again, don’t just say it is an example, tell the reader how your example illustrates a psychological health disparity by discussing how the prevalence of the disorder differs among groups, how the consequences of the disorder may differ among groups,  or how access to treatment differs among groups.  For example, children whose parents are seeking asylum are experiencing nationality/immigrant status as a system of inequality whereby they are automatically separated at the southern U.S. border. What are the psychological consequences on children or entire families of this separation? From where do you derive your answers?

Discusses Middle Childhood and Adolescence

Discusses Middle Childhood and Adolescence. During these times, the body goes through a lot of physical, psychological, emotional, and cognitive changes in regard to development and maturity levels. Think of moral behavior, moral reasoning, and the primary developmental task of school-age children during middle childhood and adolescence. Think about developing a sense of identity, independence, and puberty stages as well.

Middle Childhood is an important part of growing up, but Adolescence is a crucial part of growing up because of the many physical and psychological changes during this time (i.e. identity, puberty, social interaction, sexuality, concrete thinking, physical activity, peer pressure, etc.). This is the timeframe in one’s life that can be very rewarding or very difficult for growth development in regard to the various emotions and changes the body must endure. I’ve always thought that adolescence, along with being elderly, was one of the most difficult life stages in growth development. Click on the link below and view the video on theories of development.

Two important theorists, Erik Erikson and Sigmund Freud have played a major role in explaining and understanding how humans develop over time. Critically think and explain if you feel these theorists were accurate or not in regard to how we develop as humans. Include in your response if their theory of development was successful in your opinion. Think about how we still rely on these theories today and how they impact human growth and development overall.
