The concept of intergenerational trauma

Do you believe that the concept of intergenerational trauma should also apply to families in which there is no specific historic precipitant but there is a history of trauma-producing behavior within the family (e.g., substance abuse or domestic violence)? Why or why not?

Temperaments in different cultures

Product Launch Comprehensive Strategy

For the Capstone assessment, you will create a Product Launch Comprehensive Strategy. The Capstone represents the final stage in your goal to obtain a Master’s Degree in Operations and Project Management. This final course will allow you to demonstrate proficiency in all areas of operations and project management. You will develop an overall, comprehensive strategy to bring a new product from design to mass production within a manufacturing or service environment. Along the way you will complete 3 critical stages of the development process that will require competent skills in project & operations management.

You will also complete the three (3) stages of product launch demonstrating that the product or service has gone successfully from conception to high volume manufacturing or full service integration. Additionally, you will self-reflect on the overall program and project and operations management as a career focus. Evaluation of Capstone This Capstone will be assessed somewhat differently than other courses you have taken online at SNHU.

There are four (4) separate components that will be submitted at different times during the course; however, they all operate together to comprise the whole Capstone experience and are not assessed separately. You will be evaluated on all four (4) of them as a unit in determining whether you have demonstrated proficiency in each outcome.

All four (4) components must be completed at the highest levels as the strengths of one cannot “make up for” the weaknesses in another. Your work is expected to meet the highest professional standards. Remember, you are selling yourself as a competent operations and project management professional as much as you are selling your product launch strategy. The Capstone project is divided into three milestones, which will be submitted at various points throughout the course to scaffold learning and ensure quality final submissions. These milestones will be submitted in Modules Two, Four, and Six. The draft submission for Capstone Component 1 is due in Module Seven, Capstone Component 2 is due in Module Eight, Capstone Component 3 is due in Module Nine, and Capstone Component 4 is due in Module Ten as part of the overall Final Submission which includes revised Components 1 through 3 followed by the self-reflection of Component 4.

The concept of cultural relativism

On page three of James Rachel’s the Challenge of Cultural Relativism, he lists six claims made by cultural relativists to support the concept of cultural relativism. Choose the claim you think is the strongest and explain why you think it is the strongest claim AND chose the one you think is the weakest claim. So, to be extra clear, you will be unpacking two different claims in this discussion board. You cannot choose #1 for either because it is simply a fact.

Major areas of sociological interest

Religion, Politics, Gender and Class

The first set of topics includes two major areas of sociological interest: religion and politics. We may not ordinarily think of popular music as an important feature of these two social institutions, but it certainly is. Music functions as a powerful tool for accomplishing religious and political tasks. This power comes from music’s ability to provide meaning for theology and ideology. Please indicate/reference the reading and page numbers in parentheses where you find the material in our books. Read Ch. 5 in Understanding.
(1) Briefly define religion sociologically. What are the five ways music relates to religion? Give an example for each from the reading
(2) Briefly describe John Michael Talbot. Why has he considered a postmodern case of authenticity? Google JMT and examine his homepage and view some of his recent cable TV programs. How has he incorporated contemporary media logic into his ministry? How does he and his ministry compare to your religious/spiritual upbringing
(3) Briefly define ideology. How can popular music be used for conservative as well as liberal/progressive purposes? How does the concept of hegemony fit in with this discussion? What side would you take, and what music fits your ideological position?
(4) What is the sociological definition of the institution? How does American Idol support conservative values in America? In what ways is The Voice, American Idol and other competitions like the American presidential election process?
_______________________________________
The second set of topics includes two areas of sociological interest: gender and social class. The purpose of this array of topics is to show how central popular music is to structural sociological analysis, that is, those aspects of society that reflect society as a whole and are closely related to macro ideas such as status differences and inequality. Please indicate the page numbers of the readings where you find the material. Read Ch. 6 in Understanding.
1) Summarize the West Memphis Three situation. How does this unfortunate situation illustrate the limits of community? Explore the Internet to see if there is any update on the case.
(2) What do sociologists mean by doing gender? Give another example of a current prima donna, besides Jessica Simpson. Name one male musical performer who can be considered a prima donna, and why?
(3) What is the sociological definition of authenticity? Briefly discuss Katy Perry’s and Billie Eilish’s authenticity. In your opinion, has authenticity among women musical artists changed recently?

Learning about the digestive system

Activities
1. Read the instructions posted in this week’s Module, and attached them here, for guidance on how discussions will be used for this class. The instructions include an example of how to format this type of discussion and a grading rubric.

2. This week we are learning about the digestive system. For this discussion, we’ll review how our eating choices and our environment affect our health. Choose an eating style for humans that is important to you or that you are curious about. Some suggested eating styles are provided below, but you may choose a different style than is listed. The style you choose must have peer-reviewed scientific research written about its effect on human health.

EXAMPLES OF EATING STYLES:

Paleo
Vegetarian
Vegan
Ketogenic
Whole 30
South Beach
Mediterranean
Atkins
Weight Watcher
Zone
USDA MyPlate
Raw Food

3. You will write a 220+ word essay/discussion about how this way of eating is beneficial to or detrimental to human health – what diseases/conditions does it cause/cure. You must use at least two valid peer-reviewed sources of scientific research, published within the last five years, to support your opinion. Be sure to include both in-text citations and list the references for your sources using MLA format. In-text citations and references do not count toward the discussion word count.

Public philosophizing in the Apology

Write an essay on one of the following topics. Choose whichever question you can answer best.
1. Is Socrates that emerges as a supporter of strict obedience to the laws in the Crito at odds with Socrates who is apparently determined to defy any potential court order forbidding further public philosophizing in the Apology? Whatever stance you take, be sure to justify your answer.

2. In Politics Book I, Aristotle makes a defense of slavery as a natural institution. According to Aristotle, for whom and under what circumstances is slavery appropriate? Critically discuss the success of Aristotle’s natural slavery argument.

3. In Hobbes’s Doctrine of the State of Nature, Merriam writes: ‘Although “naturally” man is a stranger to political life and looks askance at government, as one who would not be entangled on its net, yet he possesses irresistible impulses to enter the civil condition and inevitably passes over into it. Naturally, he is out of society, but inevitably he comes in.’ (Merriam 1906, 156)

Present and critically analyze the account of this “coming in” to society that Thomas Hobbes offers in Leviathan.

4. In the Second Treatise on Government, John Locke offers an account of how the just initial acquisition of private property is possible. He writes: ‘But I shall endeavor to shew, how men might come to have a property in several parts of that which God gave to mankind in common, and that without any express compact of all the commoners.’ (Chapter V, Section 25)

Present and critically assess Locke’s argument for private property.

5. According to Jean Jacques Rousseau, his version of the ‘social contract’ can be reduced to the following formation: ‘Each of us puts his person and all his power in common under the supreme direction of the general will, and, in our corporate capacity, we receive each member as an indivisible part of the whole.’ (Of the Social Contract, 1.6)

Present and critically discuss Rousseau’s conception of the general will.

6. In On Liberty, J. S. Mill offers ‘one simple principle’ designed to regulate the restrictions that governments and societies can place on the liberty of their citizens. He writes that ‘the only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others.’ (On Liberty, Chapter 1).

Present and critically examine Mill’s Harm Principle.

7. In Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts (1844), Karl Marx examines four aspects of the alienation of labor in capitalist society. Present the four aspects of alienated labor and critically assess Marx’s solution to the problem

Perspectives of Eating Disorders

Peer Response The Journal of Men’s Studies article, "It’s a Touchy Subject": Service Providers’ Perspectives of Eating Disorders in Men and Boys" explores the perceptions and experiences of providers of eating disorder services towards men to understand the challenges and barriers experienced by spoth professionals and patients in addressing the gender bias within this field (Foye, Mycock, et al, 2023).

This small study (n=21) was performed in two phases-first concerns were discussed by participants and from there a secondary analysis was performed on the data. The findings showed that there were three main areas contributing to the barriers in diagnosing and treating men’s eating disorders. First, is that masculinity dictates that men do not seek help. Secondly, the fact that eating disorders are identified as a "woman’s issue." a stereotype held by those suffering and, unfortunately, many service providers. Lastly, there is no place nor protocol for treating men’s eating disorders even if a client is fortunate enough to admit to having a problem, needing help, and finding a provider who acknowledges that men in fact can develop an eating disorder. From this article, I have learned that gender stereotypes can pervade the mental health field-the DSM-V finally removes amenorrhea as a criteria. While men’s eating disorders may present differently from women’s, they still share a commonality. Resources, education, and treatment must be developed for these people.
