The Role of the Behavioral Scientist in the Civil Rights Movement

In his paper The Role of the Behavioral Scientist in the Civil Rights Movement, written in 1967, Martin Luther King Jr. Day talked to behavioral scientists in the United States. Please provide four instances of each concept of the person and the health logic, and elaborate on how these examples are like or unlike the person and health logic emphasized in the mental health professions.

state a question about key aspects of human culture

Overview It is time to take a virtual field trip! For this short answer assignment, visit any of the galleries in the Resources section for this week. Choose two cultural works that catch your attention, and respond to the prompt below. Prompt Craft your answer with the considerations below. Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria: Choose two cultural works that catch your attention. Identify the name of each cultural work and describe why you chose each one. Share a link for each. Compare your chosen works. How do you think each cultural work reflects its time period? Point to specific details that you see to relate them to elements of culture, such as what is valuable or meaningful to a group of people or what elements reflect history, beliefs, experiences, or other effects of culture. Now state a question about key aspects of human culture in relation to one of the cultural works selected. For example, what does a specific urn tell us about the nature of death? Then, briefly explain how you might go about doing research to find an answer to your question. For example, what keywords might you use in your search, where might you begin your research, or whom might you consult?

How gendered communication affects family interactions

Building on previous research that shows people of different genders often communicate differently, an anthropologist has been studying how gendered communication affects family interactions. The anthropologist uses recorded conversations from participant families’ homes. The anthropologist also uses documentary footage of family interactions. The interactions are analyzed for information about gendered communication, power relationships, and connections between various family members. 1. What is the primary field of anthropology addressed in this research? 2. What aspects of context must be considered as part of this research? (hint: think cultural, social, and economics)

Studying the role of soybean curd and related products in the culture of Hong Kong

Anthropologists have been studying the role of soybean curd and related products in the culture of Hong Kong. The researchers interview people about how frequently they eat soybean products, where they eat them (at home or in restaurants), and during what time of day they eat them. The researchers also ask people about how they prepare soybean products, where they obtain soybean products, and any beliefs they might have about the soybean products (such as their nutritional value). The data are used to assess the role of soybean products in the culture. The researchers are also considering how their findings relate to global soybean consumption patterns. 1.

After reading this and completing the multiple choice exercises, what aspects of context must be considered as part of this research? For example, clearly, soybean production and consumption are important to this society in Hong Kong. What aspects of this production and consumption and value should be explored in order to fully understand the integration of soybeans? 2. How might this research contribute to a comparative approach? Review the reading in chapter one! (HlNT: if you struggle with this, parallel it to your own culture. Starbucks is a popular establishment that many enjoy, at all times of the day/night. Why is this popular? If you had to explain the context to an outsider, how would you do it? Now, apply this same logic to soybean culture and this scenario)

The moral imperative derives

An Inconvenient Truth

Al Gore declares that there is a moral imperative to act to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming. He suggests that the moral imperative derives from a duty we have to leave to future generations a planet as habitable as the one we inherited from our ancestors. What is the exact nature of this duty?  How do cultural differences and differing understandings of morality play into how we respond to global climate change?

Readings

Oliver-Smith and Hoffman write, “Disasters do not just happen.  In the vast majority of cases, they are not ‘bolts from the blue” but take place through the conjuncture of two factors:  a human population and a potentially destructive agent that is part of a total ecological system, including all-natural, modified, and constructed features.”  In your own words, what does this mean to you and do you agree or disagree with it?

Esoteric and Neopagan NRM traditions

Esoteric and Neopagan NRM traditions tend to share a fascination with the individual “Self” as a focus of religious attention. Considering the various religious branches of Satanism and neopaganism, which among these do you feel offers the most in-depth exploration of the Self, and why (you may choose more than one)? Please illustrate your answer with examples from the readings.

The various aspects of the Nacirema

This week, you read about “Body Ritual Among The Nacirema,” and in my lecture, I talked about how this article can help you understand the various aspects of the Nacirema. In order to do so, please take a look at the article and answer the questions that are related to it. After learning about the “trick,” what was the actual American practice that was described in the article? How did he make it seem so strange and exotic? Use a citation to explain how this relates to the other material this week.

The symbolic character of culture

The Stadel lion-human figurine and companies like Peugeot discussed in the Harari reading are all part of the culture, specifically the symbolic character of culture. Explain how each of these is an example of the symbolic nature of culture, drawing from both the Week 1 lecture and the Harari reading for your answer. Then explain what collective belief in such symbols does for human societies according to Harari.

The components of the social construction of reality

How is culture produced and reproduced? The social construction of reality is a framework that helps us begin to answer this question. Using the social construction of reality framework

  • how food in one of the below case studies is connected with other facets of culture and
  • how it plays a role in the production and reproduction of certain cultural practices and
  • how other cultural practices produce and reproduce certain eating habits.

In  your response,  identify examples of each of the components of the social construction of reality and explain how they work together or influence each other. Include enough explanation of the cultural beliefs and practices so that someone who has not read what you have nor is a member of the same cultural group would be able to understand the connections.

The Culture Concept

This discussion is designed to highlight the similarities and differences between how we personally define the term “culture” and how anthropologists understand the “culture concept”. How does your notion of culture compare to that of your peers and anthropologists? The aim is to get you to start thinking about how different ways of conceptualizing culture can shape how we understand and study it.

Discussion Prompt

In The Culture Concept anthropologists, Cowall and Medeiros interview people at a coffee shop about what “culture” means to them. The two then reflect on their interviewees’ views as well as how their own understanding of culture has been shaped by their personal and professional experiences. In this discussion, I would like you to:

  1. Reply to this prompt with a short paragraph explaining what the term “culture” means to you.
