Substance abuse-related issues

Response to this You provided great information on the types of research methods. method validation, indigenous cultural studies, and cross-cultural comparisons. What is a specific example of how you would research a cultural issue using one of the three research methods you discussed?

Psychologists have the opportunity to work with very diverse populations, not only to provide clinical services but also to conduct research. I have learned over the years that community-based research projects are much needed in many underserved populations. These underserved population communities experience many of the same problems as other communities, however, the resources needed to solve these problems unfortunately tend to be more limited. One idea to promote these community-based research projects would be to collaborate with community leaders. They are a great source of information. Often times in these underserved communities, areas of concern/interest tend to center around the community’s youth and substance abuse-related issues. An indigenous cultural study would be a method well-fitted for a community-based research project. Any thoughts?

Communication disorder

Larnaka is four years old and has been diagnosed with a communication disorder called dyspraxia which affects her speech (no movement issues). Larnaka understands what she is wanting to communicate and confidently interacts verbally with others, however her speech is unclear and difficult to understand by both children and other adults. Larnaka has been observed more recently playing by herself and her interactions with others are becoming less. The other children are often heard saying “I don’t know what she wants”. You are very concerned about both her emotional and social development.

1. Give three examples of how this communication disorder may affect other areas of development?
2. Identify two theorists that advocate the importance of developing a sense of belonging.
3. Use these two theories to develop two strategies you would implement to strengthen Larnika’s sense of belonging.
4. Identify one piece of information which would be useful to exchange with Larnika’s family to assist her sense of belonging at the center and support her learning needs.
5. Give two examples of strategies you could use to develop this relationship with the family.

Workplace counselling services

I have some sympathy for this position as counsellors in the workplace can find themselves facing very complex dilemmas. Even in established workplace counselling services, some counsellors have difficulty accepting the authority of a manager, or even understanding the role of a manager; they seem unable to see their own roles as anything more than that of being a counsellor, even though they are part of an organization.

This occurs whether or not the manager is a counsellor; indeed, sometimes managers who are counsellors may have an even more difficult task trying to manage other counsellors and may find themselves trying to prove their counselling ability, knowledge and credibility. The work milieu can be both judgemental and competitive – quite contrary to the climate that most counsellors look to work in. Nonetheless, they are subject to all of the vicissitudes, demands and pressures of an organization, like any other employee. Unfortunately, some counsellors forget their own position in an organization because of their necessary focus on individuals and take on the role of ‘saving’ employees from the ‘dreadful’ organization, despite being themselves employees in that organization.

Can you summarize this passage into bullet points?
And why is it unfortunate that some counsellors forget their place in the organization because of the necessary focus on the individual and take on the role of “rescuing” employees from the “dreaded” organization?

A substance use disorder (SUD) is a mental disorder that affects a person’s brain and behavior, leading to a person’s inability to control their use of substances such as legal or illegal drugs, alcohol, or medications. Symptoms can range from moderate to severe, with addiction being the most severe form of SUDs.
How do you diagnose someone with substance use disorder?
Diagnosing drug addiction (substance use disorder) requires a thorough evaluation and often includes an assessment by a psychiatrist, a psychologist, or a licensed alcohol and drug counselor. Blood, urine or other lab tests are used to assess drug use, but they’re not a diagnostic test for addiction.

Discussion question: Racial diversity- are physical differences between people.

Ethnic diversity- is about culture, difference between people

“Race” is usually associated with biology and linked with physical characteristics such as skin color or hair texture.

We speak of ethnicity when referring to a group of people with a shared cultural, linguistic, national, or religious heritage.

There are hundreds of ethnic groups in the world today.

3 cultural factors that I can share are, I was raised catholic, my parents immigrated from Spain and Mexico, and I was raised and influenced more from my dad’s Spanish culture side.

Both my parents first language is Spanish, and I would say mine was too, but I attended pre-school at an early age of 2 and my primary language became English.

Spain believes in the pope therefore the catholic religion was exercised in the household. We ate a lot of “fish “meals, ate a lot of egg, potatoes and bread. This was eaten a lot in Spain. Again, I was raised more with Spanish traits and customs in which I truly appreciate.

What might be the advantages and drawbacks to being in altered states of consciousness? Give examples.
What are the drawbacks of being in an altered state of consciousness?
Thoughts may become disorganised, as evidenced during some dreams. Thinking may lack logic and problem-solving may be impaired. The memory of events that occurred during an altered state of consciousness might not be accurate and we might not even be able to recall them at all during normal waking consciousness.
