Give an overview of the long history of struggle of African Americans for civil rights and equality.  Define civil rights and give examples of the benefits of having them.  Then, explain when African Americans secured such rights on paper and practice.  Or, stated differently, having secured citizenship on paper, are African Americans equal today?  What 3-4 ways can one argue they have equal citizenship and what 3-4 ways can one argue racism still plagues the US?  Is the battle for equality over for African Americans in the US?
