An ongoing collective bargaining relationship

In your Working Groups, select an organization where there is an ongoing collective bargaining relationship. The organization can be either a public sector or privative sector organization. Address the following in your paper.

1. Provide a description of the employer in terms of: • Industry/sector • Organization size • Range of products or services • Business environment • Organizational culture • Management style • Organizational structure (provide an organizational chart if possible)

2. Provide a description of the union in terms of: • The type of union • The type of workers the union organizes • International linkages • Financial Strength • Militancy (number of strikes in the past 10 years, grievances• Type of leadership • Organizational structure (provide an organizational chart if possible) 3. Review the current Collective Agreement and report on your findings and observations: • Duration of agreement (When does it expire?) • Management rights • Provisions on wage rates and compensation • Provisions on seniority • Provisions on union security (membership requirement, dues, union stewards and time allotted for union business, use of employer facilities, • Provisions on discipline • Provisions on grievances and arbitrations • Contracting out • Vacation days and pay • Holidays and holiday pay 4. Interview separately a member of management and a union official to discuss the state of labour relations within the organization. This portion of your assignment will need to be conducted over ZOOM. Use your connections to places you may have worked to find an organization. • From each person’s perspective, what are the key issues between union and management? • What is the importance of these issues? • What major labor conflicts have occurred in the past 10 years? • What were the causes of the conflicts from each person’s perspective? • What types of grievance are most common and does either interviewee have any ideas why? 5. Assess your findings and summarize them. • What are the key issues? • Were there discrepancies between what you found through your research and what you were told by the individual representatives you interviewed? • What is your overall assessment of labor relations in this organization and how do you support your conclusions?
