Current demographics show that there are more females and more whites among the elderly than males and non-Caucasian.

However, population trends suggest that the proportion of non- Caucasian among the elderly will increase. Many of these non-Caucasian elderly people will have a lower socioeconomic status.

The number of Americans age 60 and older increased by 34% from 55.7 million to 74.6 million. In 2019, 30 million women and 24.1 million men were age 65 and older. That’s 125 women for every 100 men. At age 85 and older, this ratio increased to 178 women for every 100 men.
