Ethnic groups and boundaries. 

Conflicts can be caused by the relationship between ethnic groups and boundaries.  An example is a tension between Ghana and Benin.  The Ewe people are split in half by arbitrary boundaries established between the British and French spheres of influence in Africa in the late 19th century.
