Strong Federal government

Americans are different based on their geographic location, inherited beliefs, as well as ethical and moral standards. Generally speaking, the north and west geographically preach strong federal government, social tolerance, and detachment of religion and government. The south has largely opposite ideas, the states should be allowed to self-govern, largely more conservative ideas stemming from the large Christian population, and more widespread belief that governments should be influenced by religion. These trends and ideas have been apparent since our nation’s conception and contribute largely to the strife and turmoil our nation is currently faced with. 1. One of the important traditions underlying the constitution was individual rights. Inequitable treatment was one reason of many, that caused the independence from Britain because it strongly believed that equality should exist among all men. Although in some aspects this tradition failed, for example, slavery, it was important that there would be a balance between the government and citizens. It was more about government control and men than equality among the citizens. The reason why we have the right to freedom of speech and expression is because of this. This shows how our individual rights take a big role in how our system operates. Another critical tradition underlying the constitution was the significance of having popular sovereignty. The government could only act if approved by the people. One of the results of this important tradition is the ability to vote for senators and representatives. These traditions protect American citizens from government control and limit their power. Without these beliefs, the government would have more control over American citizens. I believe these traditions still apply today because we have now seen many changes in history due to the opportunity to use their freedom and rights. If we don’t apply these important traditions that underly the constitution, as a country we would not progress.
