Fleshy toe pads

Why might fleshy toe pads be advantageous in the forested environments early Equidae like Eohippus and Mesohippus lived in, but bony hooves are better suited to grasslands? (Hint: what is the ground like in forests vs. grasslands? Moist and spongy or dry and firmer?)
