Examine ideas and images of older people
I need help to examine ideas and images of older people (or ideas about aging) the appear in the popular media and our society as a whole. Think broadly about TV/movies, magazine advertisements, greeting cards, literature, social media, etc.
- What are our specific societal attitudes and stereotypes about aging? Please identify at least 3 ideas in your assignment.
- Support ideas with specific examples, providing justification for whether each is positive or negative in nature. Attach the image, video, link, etc., and/or give a detailed description.
In addition, please address the questions from observations
- How might aging stereotypes influence older adults’ behavior (i.e., competence, performance, health, social interactions, etc.)?
- How might these stereotypes influence other’s actions toward older adults?
- What ideas or images are being communication that run counter to typical ideas about older people and/or aging?
- What roles might counter-stereotypes play in combating negative stereotypes and its effects?
- How are older people represented in the media?Among the limited presence in media, older adults are often portrayed with negative attributes (e.g., being inactive, frail, and dependent) instead of positive attributes (e.g., being active, enjoying life, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle).
