Ligand-gated ion channels in post-synaptic cell membranes convert (chemical or electrical) signals into (chemical or electrical) A/ ones.   Many neurotransmitter receptors are ligand-gated ion channels that open in the (presynaptic or postsynaptic) cell membrane in response to neurotransmitters released by the (presynaptic or postsynaptic) A/ neuron.
