Clinical research founded on a mix of moral considerations and past occurrences

The most shocking scandal was about the health consequences of pilots who were placed in vacuum chambers with low air pressure and lack of oxygen by Nazis. The most touching part is that they were in a concentration camp and had no choice but to participate or not be informed about the procedure. Those 23 Nazi doctors in addition to being fed just salt water for days and being submerged in ice water for hours, subjects were also used in experiments with battlefield medicine.

The biggest problem was no one could regulate any of this “experiment”. They didn’t be informed of the consent. Also, any of the doctors followed any ethical rules.

The existing guidelines for clinical research are founded on a mix of moral considerations and past occurrences, some of which were extremely tragic. The uncovering of the horrors done by Nazi doctors marks the beginning of the contemporary era of human subject protection. After all unethical treatments, a set of guidelines is known as a Nuremberg code now. Since biomedical research has advanced significantly over the past century, ethical issues in clinical research are more important than ever.
