Suspects and Defendants from Myriad Cultures

Suspects and Defendants from Myriad Cultures: In last week’s discussion we recognized that the United States continues to embrace immigration from myriad cultures and nationals of those cultures continue to be the victims of domestic crime. In addition, we must not exclude the fact that offenders are also included in this mix of service requirements demanded of the criminal justice system.

Many cultures have an aversion or fear of the police or worse yet, have no respect or fear of American law enforcement and the criminal justice system. As such, the task of effectively managing and successfully resolving the criminal justice issues with these populations grows far more complex. Previous experiences, language barriers, expectations of law enforcement, cultural beliefs and ideologies, all may be in conflict with compliance to American legal system values and requirements.
