Every policy developer that is working on policy development on Indigenous people
Every policy developer that is working on policy development on Indigenous people (which arguably could be all policy development) should be responsible for reading and understanding the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Final Report and 94 calls to action. Siu (2020) states that it provides “a reservoir of information and data valuable for public policy development…” (p.111).
While policy developers do not have the final say on implementing public policies, they can have an incredible influence on developing and researching policy options. During the development process, careful attention should be given to the good policy Principle of Justice which aims to make policies “fair, more inclusive, and equitable” (p.81).
Policy developers are responsible for developing good public policies and that cannot be done unless the well-being of Indigenous peoples is considered at every stage of development. Overall, Policy developers play an important role in reconciliation and addressing harms as they identify issues, conduct research and analyze, and present options and recommendations for the government (p.31).
A very critical role of policy developers is to consult Indigenous leaders and communities to gain an understanding of their perspectives and the effects a policy could have. If policies are to be good and successful this is an important step as it will inform policy developers on social context, culture, traditions, values, and beliefs, and stakeholder dynamics (p.213).
The reply should answer those questions Tips for Responses: 1-Even if you disagree with me or your peers, do not repeat harmful stereotypes or racist tropes about Indigenous people. 2-In your responses, remember to be respectful of your peers.
Your comments should focus on issues and concepts. 3-Consider why your view is the same or different than what you read in your peers’ answers. Do you have different information? Are you drawing on different sources? Do you prioritize different values?
