Protection of liberties and rights

How important has the court system been in the protection of liberties and rights?  Discuss the role that the Supreme Court has played in American history. Do you consider the Court to be a positive attribute or a negative factor in the development of American government?  If you accept the former (positive), explain how the court has expanded our rights and liberties with specific references.  If you accept the latter (negative), explain how the court has erred in your opinion and discuss how the government would operate differently after eliminating these errors.
