What methods do researchers use to ensure that care is being taken to protect the physical and psychological well-being of research participants? The researcher’s biggest obligation is to avoid harming their participants, physically or psychologically, throughout their studies and experiments. All research institutions are required to have an Institutional Review Board (IRB), which is a committee of at least five individuals who review and monitor any study that is conducted by the institution. The IRB has the power to require a researcher to make changes to their study before it is approved. If the research chooses not to make the changes, the IRB can disapprove to study. The IRB attempts to ensure that every study that takes place within their institution provides participants the following: informed consent, the participants enter the study voluntarily, the participants can leave the study at any time, the benefits offset the risks, participants have access to information about the study and the participants confidentiality and anonymity are protected. These steps help protect the participants from physical and psychological well-being. Although these precautions are good steps to protect the well-being of participants there is no guarantee of not enduring physical or psychological issues throughout a research study. If you were assigned to test a new drug, Psychocillan, which is designed to treat a new psychological disorder with symptoms that include the inability to pay attention in psychology class, how would you design the research to (a) figure out the efficacy of the drug (i.e. does it work?), I think using an experimental method would be the best way to test the efficacy of Psychocillan. I would create two groups: one control group and one experimental group. The experimental group would receive Psychocillan. The control group would receive a placebo pill, which wouldn’t contain any contents of Psychocillan. Then I would have each group report how their ability to focus in psychology class was and if it was changed. Once I received reports/responses from both the control group and the experimental group I would be able to observe whether Psychocillan was effective or not.
