Staff recreation and meals area
At the Aces Club, the staff recreation and meals area was very small. It was cluttered with old, unused furniture and equipment. It was also poorly ventilated and the only window was jammed shut, unable to be opened. This was made worse by the fact that a number of employees smoked in there while others were eating and relaxing between shifts. To the credit of the health and safety representative, the various hazards were identified and reported at the health and safety committee meeting. Many recommendations were made at the meeting but no minutes were taken, nor were responsibilities assigned to the actions. Time went by and nothing changed. The employee absentee rate was high, due to migraine headaches and general lack of morale. – List the hazards you could identify in the above. – What could management do to improve the situation? – What records would help to provide management with evidence of any action they might like to take?
