Behrouz, at 4 years 5 months of age, is a very scientifically minded child. You notice that he is measuring the length of the table legs with the teacher’s ruler and making notes on a piece of paper. You asked him if you could see his paper, and he shyly showed you his numbers (they looked pretty good.) He would like to have the daycare get some hamsters- this is what he has told you. And, he mentioned that the hamsters are nocturnal so maybe the daycare would have to set up a camera to film them because nocturnal means nighttime – no one is at the daycare at night. If not hamsters, then maybe stick bugs. Behrouz explained that the thing about stick bugs is that it is hard to get boy stick bugs. Girl stick bugs can have baby stick bugs when they are big, but they only have baby girl stick bugs. Children were very glad when the daycare started to present dinosaur activities, especially Behrouz. You felt relieved when you were struggling to pronounce the names of some of the dinosaurs because he was able to correctly pronounce them all. Several of the children have older siblings at the nearby elementary school – there they celebrate 100 days of school so you and your co-workers decided to also celebrate this. The families were instructed to help their daycare children find 100 of the same things at their house, count these together and glue these to the large papers the daycare provided. Upon presentation of these posters you learned from Behrouz’s family that he found the lego’s he used on his poster, counted them all himself (and correctly) and then glued them on the paper

Summarize, in your own words, Behrouz’s cognitive development and compare him to developmental norms in this developmental area.

There is a lot of knowledge in Behrouz, but you are concerned that he seems to only want to talk to you and the other ECE’s. Explain three ideas you have to help Behrouz be connected socially to other children.

Summarize the child or children’s abilities in this developmental area. o Compare the child or children to developmental norms.

Suggest changes to the environment – and additional toys/materials – to enhance the child’s development.

a) Suggest 3 developmentally appropriate and play based activities that would enhance the child or children’s development (include the name of the activity, the list of necessary materials, brief instructions.) o

b) Explain why you selected the activity – making sure that you connect the observation of the child and the value of the activity.
