The dynamics of the situation and the leader’s actions

Find a recent article of the Wall Street Journal concerning a leader and situation you are interested in. For that leader and situation summarize the dynamics of the situation and the leader’s actions.  Address the three questions below in your analysis:

  • Does the dynamic in the article seem to be a great application of the “Leader, Follower, Situation” interactional framework?  If so, how?
  • Does the leader show signs of emotional intelligence (explained in Chapter 6)?  If so, how does it effect the followers and the situation?
  • Thinking through the “Leadership Grid” (figure 7.2), what style of leadership seems more relevant for this leader and why (specific examples that support that style)?
  • What leadership competencies (Ch. 7) does this leader portray (again, cite specific examples of the competencies)?

For the leader article that you feel most comfortable with your conceptual analysis and application, post a well written 500 word post including the following:

1.  Citation for the WSJ article, use (link to the library resources on the left if you are unsure how to cite newspaper articles .

2.  A summary of the people and dynamics in the article  (okay to paraphrase or quote but use italics if you do)

3.  Your analysis and application of the relevant textbook framework (responses to the questions above).

4.  Any advice you have for the leader – did they handle the situation properly or what might they have done differently?

Post your analysis to the Discussion Board by Thursday at 11:59 p.m.  You will NOT be able to see your student colleagues’ posts until you have posted your own post. Your first post is worth 20 points based on including all 4 elements above and clear writing that is fully proofread with netiquette guidelines (under “Distance Education” link if you have not already read them) followed.

Second posts are due by Sunday at 11:59 p.m.  You need to read at least five of your colleagues’ posts and respond to one with the following analysis:

  • Do you agree with the framework application they provided, is there another perspective that might add an additional perspective to what is going on in the situation?
  • Do you agree with the advice they offered the leader?  Again, is there another perspective they may not have considered.

The goal of second posts is to “stretch” the original writer to think even harder about the article and it analysis, DO NOT repeat what they said, offer new insightful perspectives.  Second posts are worth 20 points, based on insightful reading and offering new viewpoints.  Again, these must be fully proofread with clear writing
