The slow response is due to activation of the HPA axis resulting in the release of Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) from the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus into the circulation. The CRH released from the hypothalamus acts on two receptors; CRH-R1 and CRH-R2.
