The rapid spread of democracy in the 1980s and 1990s
The rapid spread of democracy in the 1980s and 1990s is commonly referred to as the “[x] [y]” of democratization, a phrase coined by Harvard political scientist Samuel Huntington. In the 19th century, democracy centred around political equality, freedom and justice. The demand for universal adult franchise gained momentum. In the 20th century, there were instances of transition to democracy, challenges to democracy and military coups.
