Way of understanding this suffering is persecution

Peter says a great deal about suffering as a Christian. The most obvious way of understanding this suffering is persecution because of ones commitment to Jesus. Are the Christians you work with daily experiencing such persecution? If so, share an example or two. If not, is it possible to include matters such as serious illness, death of a loved one, or financial distress in the category of suffering as a Christian? Why or why not?
