Suicide is the second leading cause of death in adolescents and young adults
Suicide is the second leading cause of death in adolescents and young adults (only second to accidental/unintentional injuries).
Those with depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, psychotic disorders, are among the psychiatric diagnoses that increase risk of suicide.
Short-term use of benzodiazepines (not exceeding 4 weeks) has shown a largely positive risk/benefit with a suicide preventative effect if taken under the right circumstances to lower anxiety and reduce insomnia.
However, other studies suggest an increased risk of suicidal behavior with benzodiazepine use.
Examine what literature is available on suicide risk and benzodiazepines and reflect on what implications these findings on how clinicians work with clients with anxiety disorders who are prescribed tranquilizers?
