Technically competent
Review the case below. Using the answer form (located in the homework folder), determine which employee you would delegate to complete the various tasks listed. You must give at least one (1) task to each employee but can assign additional tasks to anyone as you deem appropriate. Be sure to explain why you delegated that task(s) to each particular worker.
Case:
You are the administrative director of the oncology (cancer) department of a major hospital in your city. Your department has been awarded a $1 million grant to conduct a study to determine the connection between human papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical cancer in female patients. There are eight staff members in your department that you can involve in the study. Your task is to select the right person for the right task.
Your staff members are:
1) Arthur– who is technically competent when it comes to computers and equipment. He seems to communicate clearly, especially in writing and pays attention to details.
2) Carol– who has consistently shown good judgment in matters of finance, particularly in analyzing reports and statements for financial implications.
3) Kate– who is a dependable employee. She is young and fairly new to the institution, but she appears ready to handle increased responsibility.
4) Harry– by both credentials and experience, Harry is your most technically qualified employee.
5) Fred– is low-key, polite, and a diplomatic “people person.” He is clearly your best writer and is good at handling conflicts.
6) Millie– is an empathic individual. Both patients and staff are comfortable with her and inclined to speak freely.
7) Ed– has displayed both technical and managerial skills. He has successfully run several special projects in the past.
8) Elaine– is an organizer. Few details escape her attention.
The tasks you are going to delegate to your employees are:
1. Locate and screen subjects for the study.
2. Manage the study, including responsibility for technical content, subject selection, and logistical arrangements (ex. financial reimbursement to subjects, securing space, scheduling).
3. Schedule and organize periodic project review meetings.
4. Review and approve all correspondence relating to the study.
5. Analyze and approve all expense reports relating to the study.
6. Write monthly status and progress reports for the study.
7. Answer all inquiries concerning study activities from the hospital itself, external medical personnel, and the media.
8. Provide technical support for the study.
9. Requisition standard supplies for the office and assure that the supply room is adequately stocked.
10. Address any ethical concerns about the study.
