The federal and state governments
In the United States, the federal and state governments share many concurrent powers such as taxation, creating courts, and policymaking in areas such as education and healthcare. An institutional arrangement that creates two relatively autonomous levels of government, each possessing the capacity to act directly on behalf of the people with the authority granted by the national constitution. All State governments are modeled after the Federal Government and consist of three branches: executive, legislative, and judicial. The U.S. Constitution mandates that all States uphold a “republican form” of government, although the three-branch structure is not required.
