What geologic processes makes it so that volcanoes like Mt. St. Helens are not places to “watch the lava and just get out of the way when it comes”, which is what some people said when warned that an eruption could take place in 1980. There are 4 particular events that came with this eruption needed to discuss, as well as 2 major drivers of the eruption style: chemical composition and volatiles.
