The principle of a separation of powers
Explain how the political objective that inspires the principle of a separation of powers model of government (United States) is liberty and that of a responsible government model (Canada) is efficiency. Is the efficiency of responsible government purchased at the price of a certain loss of political liberty (i.e., Canada is seen by some to be a form of elected dictatorship)? Under what conditions, if any, might the efficiency of responsible government be preferred (MMBB, Chapter Three)?
