Types of microaggressions are depicted in the film
questions based on the movie “My Whole Self “What are microaggressions? What types of microaggressions are depicted in the film? How do the different forms of microaggression discussed in the film relate to different dimensions of identity (age, race, class, gender, sexuality, trans identity, ability, etc.)? What does this tell us about the nature of intersectionality, power, and privilege? Do different individuals encounter the same types of microaggression? Or, are the microaggressions they face “tailored” to their unique identities? What is the relationship between microaggressions and socialization/normalization? How do our ideas about what is–or is not–“normal” influence our likelihood of engaging in microaggression? How does behavior like microaggression “police” or “enforce” collective beliefs and ideologies about what is natural/unnatural, right/wrong, deserving/undeserving in society?Do you think microaggression is an unintentional statement of bias? Or, is it a conscious attempt to “put people in their place”? Both? Neither? After reflecting on the film, can you think of any examples of microaggression that you experience in daily life? If so, pick an example and briefly describe the microaggression. Who was involved? What aspect of your identity was subject to critique? How did this microaggression make you feel? If you cannot think of an example of a microaggression directed at you, what do you think this says about your relative power and privilege in society?
