Satyagraha by Gandhi Background:
Gandhi was born in the region of Gujarat on the NW coast of India just down a bit from the Indus Valley and the Thar Desert. His family moved to England where he was educated and received a law degree. His mindset, like Paul in Hotel Rwanda, was that he was allowed to make his way in a dominated white culture and society that did not offer the “dream” of advancement and station that he aspired to achieve. He advocated the nonviolence movement that had actually been quite popular in India for some time. There had been the Ahimsa movement as far back as the beginning of Buddhism and Jainism. Also, during the Hindu Renaissance, there was a resurgence of the nonviolent movement in Bengal called Swadeshi (“one’s own country ” in Sanskrit) which included refusing Indian goods, non-violence, and a violent wing that saw burning and destruction of British goods.
