Canadian Indigenous existence

Research essay on any one theme/aspect of Canadian Indigenousness/Canadian Indigenous existence from any one of these three texts: –

1-As It Was in the Beginning – Pauline Johnson

2- Growing up Native – Carol Geddes

3- Pretty Like a White Boy: The Adventures of a Blue-Eyed Ojibway – Drew Hayden Taylor

You can pick only one of the above texts and analyse your selected theme with the help of at least three secondary sources*.

This paper/essay should be complete with a thesis/argument; quotes; detail – (Do give a word count at the end of your essay. End of the text Works Cited is not a part of this word count).

Your essay should be written in the 3rd person, so be sure to avoid any 1st person subjective experiences. The assignment is not about how you felt when you read the text you are selecting. You are presenting an argument about the theme you are selecting and then analyzing the theme. You are to base your argument on the theme from this one story you are selecting; and then you are proving that argument with the help of secondary sources you will find from the Seneca Libraries. Also, the essay is neither an explanation nor a summary of your selected text from above, though you can include a brief summary to contextualize your argument.

Underline your thesis statement in the introduction paragraph so that I know clearly the line of argument you are taking.

Follow the associated rubric. (See page 2 of this document)

A sample research essay is posted for you. Also posted are brief additional instructions in a PPT. Note that no late submissions are being allowed for this assignment ______________________________

*Secondary sources are the supporting articles you will pick online from Seneca Libraries. (Remember the research assignment you did in your COM101?) Secondary sources are research material that you use to help support your own argument/s about the primary sources. For this assignment you must conduct academic research from secondary sources and incorporate in a logical and productive fashion relevant secondary quotes from these sources that directly relate to the argument you are discussing. Please remember that secondary sources are not to give you ideas, they are supposed to support the ideas and arguments that you are defending in your writing of this essay. These sources are also not supposed to be just used to snatch a bunch of random quotes and scatter them in your essay. Each paragraph of your own essay must have at least one quote from primary source and at least two quotes from secondary sources. If you do active research, you will find and select material that truly will help your own argument. You will be able to seamlessly integrate those materials into your own paper. Please understand that simply having quotes from secondary sources does not necessarily mean you will get grade in the Research Category on the associated rubric.
