Steps in the ethical decision making process

Describe the steps in the ethical decision making process.  Think of one potential situation that may arise in human services in which there may be a conflict of ethics or where ethical decisions aren’t clear, and apply the ethical decision making model.  If you are unable to come up with your own example, feel free to borrow ideas from the case studies referenced in the readings.  Have you ever had to face an ethically unclear situation?  If so, how did you handle it?

Matrix of power relations

Conservatism may work to perpetuate a particular matrix of power relations that benefits the wealthy and the powerful and that holds potential challenges to power from below in check. There are some good arguments that justify how conservatism works.  Hobbes argues that as “peace is happiness” all people, regardless of their place in society, can rationally enter into a “social contract” with a “sovereign” (essentially the state) in which they relinquish the freedom of the state of nature in favor of loyalty to an absolute sovereign who provides them with protection and ensures peace.

Social Darwinists argue that the people who succeed in rising to the top of society are the rightful rulers of that society because they have shown themselves to be the “fittest” amongst their fellow citizens.  But conservatism, and the orientation towards law and order that goes with it, have easily existed within democratic systems.  Strident opponents of Conservative policies may refer to Conservatives as “Fascists” but there is a difference and what I want you to do in this essay is to explore the nature of that difference.

Value of one job over another

What is the value of one job over another? There are a lot of factors determining this. The amount of education required, how difficult or challenging the work is, the prestige (having a high status) associated with the work, and more. The biggest factor, in our economy, is often how much profit the work/job generates for the owners of that industry.

One factor that isn’t considered when it comes to pay and compensation is the social value of the work. By social value, I mean that work benefits society, it makes the society better. There are some jobs/work that have a high benefit to society – a high social value – and some jobs/work that have a negative benefit to society – a low social value.

The expansion of slavery between 1790 and 1860

The expansion of slavery between 1790 and 1860 ushered in a new developmental phase of the “Peculiar Institution” in antebellum America, as white masters from the eastern seaboard states transported their slave property into the terrain of the “deep South” with the intention of exploiting its fertile, agricultural lands for the purpose of growing cotton.

But the process of transporting and selling slaves across the “Deep South” came at the physical and mental expense of entire slave communities that had endured years of oppression and torture at the hands of their masters. Please describe the nature and various dimensions of slave treatment on southern plantations, and how slaves coped with, and overcame, the material and psychological constraints imposed on them during antebellum America.

The Atlantic Slave Trade

The Atlantic Slave Trade, which unfolded for nearly 400 years, transformed the demographic, economic and cultural makeup of the Atlantic World at the expense of African slaves who labored on plantations of varying kinds in the “New” World.   Forced from their villages and communities against their will, African slaves ventured to unknown destinations where they struggled to adapt to, and survive in, inhospitable living circumstances that would often push them to their bodily limits. Describe the process by which the Atlantic Slave Trade first emerged and developed in its earliest phases and how it shaped and affected the economies and societies of the “Atlantic World,” especially colonial America.

The  problem with volunteer tourism

Blogger Pippa Biddle highlights the  problem with volunteer tourism Westerners end up getting involved in the sex trade. Those who participate in volunteer tourism do not genuinely have empathy and compassion for those they are seeking to help. It is too focused on global North and not global South countries. Westerners become so involved with the local community that they never want to leave Volunteer tourists do not necessarily have the skill set to provide the kind of help and support that is most useful.
