The realities of Structural racism and sexism

Context: As increased attention is given to the realities of structural racism and sexism in American culture, organizations are increasingly focused on diversifying talent, creating a mission of anti-racism and equity, and hiring a workforce that is trained to think about the value of diversity, inclusivity, and equity at work.  In “Do your Employees Know Why You Believe in Racial Equity,” Ruchika Tulshyan asserts that “done right, creating diverse, equitable, inclusive organizations yield greater profitability, innovation, and smarter teams.”  In other words, a commitment to inclusion and equity is critical to organizational success.

This post asks you to reflect on the value of diversity, inclusivity and equity at work and the ways in which you can be a more effective ally.  Finally, you will consider resources on anti-descrimination policies so that you are better equipped to advocate for yourself and your colleagues in the workplace.

RIGHT OR WRONG?

Managers at all levels have to deal with ethical dilemmas and those ethical dilemmas are found in all kinds of circumstances. For

instance, New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, who is

regarded as an upstanding and outstanding player in Major

League Baseball, admitted that in a September 2010 game

against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays he faked being hit by a pitch in

order to get on base. According to game rules, a hit batter

automatically moves to first base. In this case, the ball actually hit

the knob of Jeter’s bat, but he acted as if the pitch had actually struck him. Jeter later scored a run, although the Yankees

ultimately lost the game. Such ethical dilemmas are part and

parcel of being a manager although they’re not easy, you’ll learn

how to recognize such dilemmas and appropriate ways of responding.

The actual proposal that you will be submitting should outline a problem that you want to solve and how you will use data mining techniques to solve it. A business problem from your work would be a likely candidate but it doesn’t have to be directly related to your work. The key is that this should not be a hypothetical example like something from the textbook, it should be something with which you have personal experience.

The draft of your proposal should include:

1. A description of the problem you want to support with a data science solution

2. Why the problem you selected can be solved with predictive modeling

3. The use you want to support with this solution and how it could add value to an organization

4. A description of the model and data mining techniques that will be used and why they are appropriate given the problem at hand. If doing supervised learning the target variable should be clear.

5. How and where you would get the data required to train your model. This should also include at least 5 attributes that would help your predictive modeling.

Note that you are not required to find real data nor perform any data analysis for this project, but you should write your proposal as if this were the start of a real project you were considering undertaking. When writing your proposal, consider the steps of the CRISP-DM process to help guide your thinking. However, the proposal should be written in paragraph form.
