The Legacy of Peter John Sloly, Ottawa Chief of Police

Using the Newspaper Article titled” The Legacy of Peter John Sloly, Ottawa Chief of Police,” identify and analyze the construction of your crime and/or policing story in the mass media discourse (File: The Legacy of Peter John Sloly)

Premise: All media messages are constructed; each medium has a different characteristic, use of language, and structure. These mediums produce a particular purpose. Building on the skills developed in the first analysis (the file I uploaded) and applying course materials, students are to analyze additional media sources to address the single topic, aspect, and/or theme from their initial news story.

Objective: Students are to identify and analyze the construction of their crime and/or policing story in the mass media discourse. – use the exact same story as the one that was used in the file I uploaded!!!!

This assignment is a critical analysis of the framing, construction, and representation of their initial topic ( the uploaded file) within the context of various mediated sources. Students are to ground their analysis in the appropriate theory in order to substantiate their main argument.

For this assignment, students should address how their topic ( topic is to be the same as the one chosen in the file uploaded paper) has been constructed (i.e. framed, portrayed, imaged) in other media sources and how these elements have contributed to the general understanding of the topic and/or reactions by the justice system. By analyzing more than one mediated source, such as daytime or prime time television, film, social media, newspapers, etc., students should consider all angles of their media source “representation” of their topic.
There are three aspects to this assignment:

A critical engagement of the newspaper story’s topic in more than one media source.
The theoretical link that guides the main argument, and
An analysis that includes the ways the selected additional sources are used, understood, framed, and so on, as it relates to media and crime.
Students are to consider their initial news story as their first representation of the topic (crime and/or police story) and determine the effectiveness of the other media sources.

Elements of the essay should include the following:
