Managing Risk: Assessment and Countermeasures Critical Infrastructure Sectors Communications, Information Technology, Chemical, Healthcare and Public Health, and Defense Industrial Base

As you may have noticed, each week as we discuss the different CIKR sectors, the subject of risk assessment and countermeasures is directly correlated to each one.  This week we look at five sectors – communications, information technology, chemical, healthcare and public health, and defense industrial base.  One sector, IT, has already been compromised in a number of recent events – from a department store, to a healthcare company to another company that protects our identity.  Health care is also a concern. Many of us remember the Anthrax scare.  Take a close look at these sectors and the plans that addresses them.

Idol our culture collectively worships

For this writing project, write an argumentative paper in which you select one idol our culture collectively worships and argue if this is a positive or negative statement on society.

Instructions:

In David Foster Wallace’s speech, “This is Water,” Wallace speaks to Kenyon College graduates about how to critically approach the so-called “real world.” More specifically, our ability to choose is a common motif found in his speech—what and how we choose to think about our world. Wallace uses this premise to argue that people, whether religious or not, are always choosing something, someone, or some entity to worship. Worship of things like sex, greed, money, etc., thus becomes defining qualities of American culture, producing a nuanced representation of core values and beliefs.

For this writing project, write an argumentative paper in which you select one idol our culture collectively worships and argue if this is a positive or negative statement on society. Please keep in mind this paper is not a religion paper, nor is it a paper that defends or attacks the existence of polytheistic or monotheistic belief systems. Instead, try to focus on some of the secular idols that Wallace suggests and synthesize the results of your research in a clear and engaging way. To help strengthen your argument, you will incorporate at least 3 credible sources to help provide evidence supporting your argument. Be sure to evaluate all sides to the issue to develop a well-rounded position.

If you are the kind of writer that needs organizational guidance, refer to Chapters 13 & 38 in your textbook for an overview of how to organize a basic argument.

Helpful Tips:
• To be arguable, a position must reflect one of at least two points of view.
• A well-balanced argument discusses the other point of view and ultimately reasons why your point of view is stronger or better supported. This is called a rebuttal, and it involves intimately knowing your topic’s points of contention (major differing points).

The term Grit: Unyielding courage

As you begin striving toward your professional goals and future careers, you may notice the term grit popping up in more and more motivational speeches, college applications, and job descriptions. Merriam-Webster defines “grit” as “a small hard sharp particle (as of sand)” or “firmness of mind or spirit : unyielding courage.” It is this second definition that has given “grit” new life, becoming a watchword for businesses and colleges across the nation, emblazoned across highway billboards and university marquees. In Jerry Useem’s “Is Grit Overrated?,” the author explores this latest branding of self-determination by speaking with Angela Duckworth, University of Pennsylvania psychology professor and author of Grit. Read Useem’s article, which both explores and critiques Duckworth’s concept of “grit,” and respond to the questions below.

One of Duckworth’s most revelatory discoveries is how truly successful people deal with feelings like “frustration, disappointment, [and] boredom.” What does Duckworth argue that people with “grit” do with these emotions that separate them from their less-successful counterparts?
While Duckworth continues to emphasize the importance of “grit” for achieving one’s goals, how does the article’s author prove to us that many businesses and clients actually do not prefer “grit”? Provide particular examples from the article to reinforce your points.
What does Jerry Useem argue are the drawbacks of making our challenges more visible? What does the author of the article state, though, is beneficial to being more open about our difficulties? Do you, personally, feel that being transparent about the struggles of success is good or bad? Why?
Useem also critiques Duckworth’s focus on “directional consistency.” What specifically does “directional consistency” mean, and why does the author believe that this might hinder someone’s success? Can you think of another reason why “directional consistency” might be more damaging to success than helpful? Explain yourself fully, using specific examples and details.

Use of language, and structure

Premise: All media messages are constructed; each medium has a different characteristic, use of language, and structure. These mediums produce a particular purpose. Building on the skills developed in the first analysis (the file I uploaded) and applying course materials, students are to analyze additional media sources to address the single topic, aspect, and/or theme from their initial news story.
Objective: Students are to identify and analyze the construction of their crime and/or policing story in the mass media discourse. – use the exact same story as the one that was used in the file I uploaded!!!!

This assignment is a critical analysis of the framing, construction, and representation of their initial topic ( the uploaded file) within the context of various mediated sources. Students are to ground their analysis in the appropriate theory in order to substantiate their main argument.

For this assignment, students should address how their topic ( topic is to be the same as the one chosen in the file uploaded paper) has been constructed (i.e. framed, portrayed, imaged) in other media sources and how these elements have contributed to the general understanding of the topic and/or reactions by the justice system. By analyzing more than one mediated source, such as daytime or prime time television, film, social media, newspapers, etc., students should consider all angles of their media source “representation” of their topic.
There are three aspects to this assignment:

A critical engagement of the newspaper story’s topic in more than one media source.
The theoretical link that guides the main argument, and
An analysis that includes the ways the selected additional sources are used, understood, framed, and so on, as it relates to media and crime.
Students are to consider their initial news story as their first representation of the topic (crime and/or police story) and determine the effectiveness of the other media sources.

Length 8 pages. Double-space. APA reference. Times New Roman 12 pt font. Default margins. Bibliography included. No min sources. Body: Analysis

Assessment that explores theoretical concepts and links to their initial crime and/or police story.
Brief summary of the original newspaper article/issue.
Identifies/summarizes the mediated sources.

The retreat of the global company

The retreat of the global company  (2017, January 28). The Economist, 422(9025), 18-22.

Assume that you’re the marketing manager of a consumer products company (e.g., for a soft drink or smartphone producer). After reading this article, you have started to question the real benefits of international business to your company. You have called the frontline executives to discuss the issues included in this article. Your task for this assignment is to present these executives with a strategic direction in terms of your company’s future interest in international business.

Which perspective will you take? Do you agree with the views expressed in the article or not? In your strategic report, support your views by addressing the following questions:

  1. Is the accepted idea of going global to seek new customers and make more profits still valid?
  2. Should large companies pack up and return home to focus on local markets?
  3. Do you see any connections between the declining performance of multinational companies and the increasingly protectionist policies of the largest countries in the world, including the EU and the United States?
  4. What are the harms of globalization?
  5. Some argue that the backlash against globalization has also been a backlash against big businesses in global markets. What alternatives do they have to be competitive?
