Ideal system

Read the NAQ article that was posted in the lesson. Knowing what you know from the chapters in this unit (Chapters 9 through 13), discuss the recommendations presented in the article for the Ideal system: Simple, fast documentation with minimal redundancy EHR coordination with patient and family needs and wishes Central source of best practice forms and other resources in a free, vendor-neutral, and accessible library Multidisciplinary collaboration on the design of EHR and CDS systems Data: Standardized, actionable, and interoperable Integration of biomedical devices with the EHR to avoid nurses entering that data Multiple sources of decision support information for clinicians Decision support dashboards Discuss how these recommendations (re: nursing informatics) would affect nursing workflow and meaningful use. Pick and choose some of the ideas from the article and apply them to workflow analysis, system design, and meaningful use concepts from Chapter 13. This will require a bit of thinking, and please do not feel locked into one recommendation. Just make sure to support your opinions with rationales. Feel free to speculate and explore! Enjoy the opportunity!

Down’s syndrome

Mrs. Giovanni is a 92-year-old widowed immigrant from Italy. She is the caregiver of her youngest child, Antonio, who is 47 years old and has Down’s syndrome and lives with her in her home.

Mrs. Giovanni has support once weekly to support her with bathing. Mrs. Giovanni greets you at the door. She is not as bright or cheerful as she usually is. I can see the frown on her face. I look over to find the kitchen looking messy which is unusual for her. She tells you ‘ I haven’t been getting much sleep lately because Antonio has been up all night playing games on that machine and making lots of noise when he is snacking in the kitchen at night”. She continues in a worried voice that “I don’t know what to do with him, he won’t go to the day program because he sleeps all day. I am exhausted, I don’t know how much longer I can go on like this.

As you walk into the bathroom, you ask your usual questions about her garden and her plans for cooking that day. Her answer surprises you when she says, “I just don’t have the energy to do anything, all i can think about is what I am going to do with my boy Antonio.” While she is sitting on the side of the tub removing her stockings you notice Mrs. Giovanni becoming teary.

Licensure of healthcare facilities

Licensure of healthcare facilities is mandatory and is obtained from the state in which the facility will operate.  Accreditation of healthcare facilities is voluntary.  Independent organizations develop standards and conduct surveys and audits to determine if they will proved accreditation to healthcare facilities.  What are some reasons a facility would seek accreditation even though it has already been licensed?  Why might a facility choose not to seek accreditation?

Use of immunizations to prevent disease

Who should pay the cost of healthcare for preventable illnesses? This is a hot topic of debate in healthcare today. Preventable illnesses include the following:

  • Smoking cigarettes and its link to cancer
  • Obesity and its Association with Hypertension and Type 2 Diabetes
  • Use of immunizations to prevent disease or reduce the likelihood of serious infection or hospitalization

There have been increases in vaccine-preventable illnesses in recent years. These illnesses include measles, chickenpox, HPV, influenza, and now COVID-19.

Insurance companies did not charge patients for out-of-pocket costs for COVID-19 during the early days of the pandemic. It is estimated that “some 88% of people with insurance coverage would have paid nothing if hospitalized” (Hart, 2021). That may change. Vaccines are now available, free, and proven effective at preventing serious illness and hospitalization. Many insurance companies are shifting the cost of COVID-19 treatment back to the patient (Hart, 2021).

Review the health and economic costs of chronic diseases in this article.

Watch this short video on the cost of being unvaccinated for COVID patients, and take a stance in the debate.

Consider the following in your response:

  • Who do you think should pay for the cost of treatment associated with a preventable disease?
  • What specific examples support your choice?

Erik Erikson’s psychosocial development

Choose one of the stages in Erik Erikson’s psychosocial development theory that you have experienced or are experiencing now. How do you feel about completing this stage? What impact did that difficult time have on your personality?

As a starting point, let’s consider what we know about the stage as a whole. Then, make the connection to one’s own life, explaining how values and experiences relate. Include meaningful words, symbols, and examples. A memorable day in one’s life during that period may be the moment of the climax of a key event or moment.
