Micro-skills used in counseling

A Counseling Skills Experiment As with all new skills, time and practice make a difference. The micro-skills used in counseling are no different. Practicing skills even in social conversation offers insight into the effects of applying these skills so that you can use them intentionally in counseling. Intentionally use one of this week’s micro-skills ( attending skills, encouragers, a reflection of content, or reflection of feelings ) in a social conversation with a friend or co-worker. In 3 or 4 paragraphs describe what happened and identify the impact that using this micro-skill had upon the interaction. Be specific.

Define the adaptation-level phenomenon

Define the adaptation-level phenomenon and provide at least one example of it. Explain how upward social comparison causes dissatisfaction and how downward social comparison facilitates contentment. In your response, provide one example that demonstrates the relationship between upward social comparison and dissatisfaction, as well as one example that demonstrates the relationship between downward social comparison and contentment.

The psychotherapeutic modalities

Mary Jones brought her 49-year-old mother, Mrs. Sandra Davis, to the community mental health center. Mrs. Jones states that she is concerned about her mother. Mrs. Jones describes her mother as becoming more and more withdrawn. Her mother refuses to leave home, stays in her bedroom with the lights off, has no appetite, does not bathe nor comb her hair, and is always crying.

Mrs. Davis is widowed. Her husband died one year ago. She has three children who live in their own homes/apartments. The youngest child just recently moved to an apartment because she wanted more privacy.

From your observation, you notice that Mrs. Davis’ face is sad. Her forehead is pinched and tight, and her eyes are downcast. She complains of insomnia, lack of energy, poor appetite, and pressure in her chest. She frequently sighs as she talks. Mrs. Davis says that she is worthless, that everything will always turn out bad no matter what she does, and that she has nothing to live for. She says that she would never commit suicide because people don’t go to heaven if they commit suicide.

Objective quality of behavior

Erikson argues that deviance is NOT an objective quality of behavior; rather, social audiences label deviance based on directly or indirectly witnessing such behavior. In short, deviance is less about statistical evidence and more about the quality of social reaction.  Using drunk driving as an example, how does the audience’s reaction establish boundaries between recreational drinking and drunk driving, especially the legal response to the latter?  In your answer pay particular attention to the age of offenders as an important boundary.

State law enforcement agencies
