Anesthesia services

Assign the appropriate code and physical status modifier to describe anesthesia services for this non-MEDICARE claim: The patient has the Achilles tendon repaired with a graft. The patient has controlled hypertension.

Assign the appropriate code and physical status modifier to describe anesthesia services for this non-MEDICARE claim: A healthy 60-year-old patient underwent a laryngoscopy.

Assign the appropriate code and physical status modifier to describe anesthesia services for this non-MEDICARE claim: A 48-year-old Medicare patient presents to the operating room for repair of a recurrent incisional hernia in the lower abdomen. The anesthesiologist notes the patient has a severe systemic disease.

Component of community health

The collection, interpretation, and dissemination of data is an important component of community health as highlighted in Chapter 3. We learned of the various ways of collecting data and displaying it for the general public to analyze. In order to implement successful community health programs that will make an impact, we must collect data from various sources to see how extensive the problem is in the community and subsequently design, implement, and evaluate community health programs to address the problem.

For this week’s discussion forum post, I would like you to search for data sets from the County of Orange, the State of California, and the United States health databases for one of the following diseases.

  1. Diabetes
  2. Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
  3. Mental Health
  4. Cancer
  5. COVID-19

Find the prevalence rate, incidence rate, and mortality rate for your selected disease at the county, state, and federal levels. Also identify who is impacted the most by your selected disease (ethnic group, seniors, children, etc..) Please summarize your findings and provide any charts or other visual aids to present the data you collect.

The production of thyroid hormone

Hypothyroidism, a disease characterized by a decrease in the production of thyroid hormone, is hypothesized to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD).  In a follow-up study of 1,000 men aged 55 years and older, the investigators are interested in the potential impact of subclinical hypothyroidism on the incidence of myocardial infarction. The overall cumulative incidence of CVD in this cohort was 1.8%. The cumulative incidence of CVD was 12.8% among the 47 men with subclinical hypothyroidism and 1.3% among men without hypothyroidism. The overall prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism in the cohort was 4.7%.

Q: Assuming causality, what proportion of CVD in men aged 55 and above with subclinical hypothyroidism can be prevented by treating all men with subclinical hypothyroidism with thyroid hormone replacement therapy? Calculate the etiologic fraction among the exposed.

Parasympathetic nervous systems

What are the other names used to denote the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems and why? What neurotransmitter is synthesized in the preganglionic fibers of the sympathetic neurons? What neurotransmitter is synthesized in the preganglionic fibers of the parasympathetic neurons? What neurotransmitter is synthesized in the postganglionic fibers of the sympathetic neurons? What neurotransmitter is synthesized in the postganglionic fibers of the parasympathetic neurons? What are the exceptions that I emphasized in the class with regard to ANS? Would you consider somatic nerve as part of the ANS? If not, why?

The electromagnetic quantum vacuum

Here’s astrophysicist Bernard Haisch: “The electromagnetic quantum vacuum is a form of light. It is an underlying sea of energy that permeates every tiny volume of space, from the emptiest intergalactic void to the depths of the Earth, the Sun, and our own bodies. Our world of matter is like the visible foam atop a very deep ocean of light.” Discuss the significance of this description for human physiology and identity.

Treatment of latent tuberculosis infection

You are a medical assistant at a local hospital. You have been asked to give a presentation on the diagnosis and treatment of latent tuberculosis infection. The presentation will be open to the public so instead of presenting a real patient case, you decide to create a fictional sample case.

make the single case and list the characteristics of the person you will be testing and treating. Describe basic information about the patient including age, sex, lifestyle, and pertinent medical history.

Take the audience through the typical diagnosis and treatment of TB. Describe the person and their experience including their feelings and concerns at this time. Hospital personnel should leave the presentation to understand the physical and psychological consequences for the patient.

Without treatment, what is your patient’s lifetime risk for TB reactivation?

Your case patient has reported or has been diagnosed with another risk factor of developing active TB infection (e.g. – diabetes, HIV, organ transplant). How much does this factor increase their risk? Does it change the recommended treatment for this patient?

Cultural competence for health care systems

Conduct an internet search for hospitals or other healthcare institutions and determine whether they incorporate cultural competence in their operations.

Write an essay incorporating the lesson’s material assessing cultural competence for health care systems and any other relevant material from the lesson, articles, or outside reading.

You can compare, at a minimum, two organizations.

Make sure to incorporate the lesson’s content.

Other guiding questions.

As you search, do you think (generally) more institutions/organizations are embracing this concept of providing culturally and appropriate care to patients or not?

What are the challenges and barriers these organizations face as they implement CLAS?

For the organizations that have had success in implementing CLAS, what are some of the reasons for the success?

Submit your one page essay, including citations

The risk of coronary heart disease

In a study investigating the relationship between exercise and the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) among women, a cohort of healthy women (assuming no CHD at the beginning of the study) aged 35-60 were surveyed to ascertain the frequency of weekly exercise. The women were followed for 10 years. Investigators observed a total of 134 incident cases of CHD, 80 among women that reported exercising once per week, 21 among women that reported exercising twice per week, and the remainder in the group that reported no regular exercise over the study period. Person-years of observations for the exposure groups were as follows:  87,082 p-yrs for twice per week, 198,003 p-yrs for once per week, and 65,329 p-yrs for no exercise.

a. Set up the 2 x 3 table for analysis of this data.

b. Calculate the most appropriate measure of disease frequency for the exposure group

Purpose of reports and data visualization in health care

Explain  the purpose of reports and data visualization in health care and  the benefits of generating reports from gathered data? Provide an example of how report data are used in a health care setting.

Describe how incomplete clinical documentation, disparate electronic records, and inconsistent policy affects data acquisition and  factors that can influence how often data should be collected.  Assess the information needed to perform a workflow study tied to wait times in an emergency department. Include the relevant data that would need to be acquired in order to evaluate wait times.

The inequalities in healthcare

COVID-19 really highlighted the inequalities in healthcare for vulnerable communities. Find research that addresses a specific demographic or vulnerable population and the COVID-19 healthcare issues. Share the conclusions of the research and any recommendation provided by the authors. How do leaders and managers enable others to act? In accordance with the mission/vision of an organization? Is it really about how you take an active role in the lives of others in order to bring out their best within the organization?
