Depression and other mental health disorders

Depression and other mental health disorders oftentimes go undiagnosed because of the stigma associated with them. This is particularly dangerous, due to the fact that suicide is far too often the unfortunate outcome for those who fail to seek help or be treated for mental health issues.

Imagine that you are a high school guidance counselor and you are tasked by the principal to encourage students who experience overwhelming distress to seek help. Consider what resources you would need to make such a program effective.

PART 1:

Explain what key areas you would need to address to stand up an effective program. How would you advertise to the student population? What mental health issues are you targeting? Explain how you will reduce stigmatic beliefs and thoughts to improve the chances that someone will be comfortable seeking help.

Explain the identity development model

Explain the identity development model you most identify with and why. Apply this model to your own experiences. Be sure to describe each stage and provide an example(s) of each stage from your personal experience. How might oppression or privilege influence one’s identity development?

Understanding of mental fortitude and its influence

Each of us deals with hardships each day, placing mental barriers between ourselves and our goals. We all strive to push through these thoughts, as some of the Manifest Destiny explorers/adventurers/migrants did (think of the Oregon Trail type of expeditions). Please describe your understanding of mental fortitude and its influence on our daily lives, goals, long-term accomplishments, and more. In what ways do you practice “pushing forward” with your goals? Do you ever encounter obstacles, and if so, how do you respond?

Criminal processing

There have been several high-profile instances where children and adolescents have committed horrible crimes, including homicide. Should crimes involving child or adolescent offenders be handled differently from similar crimes committed by adult offenders? Should chronological age or developmental level influence criminal processing, the trial process or location, or sentencing? There are no “right” or “wrong” answers to these questions. Please provide complete, thoughtful responses to all parts of the discussion question and explain why you think the way that you do. As with all discussions in this course, feel free to disagree (respectfully!) or agree with your classmates. Please be sure to read the “Online Discussion Instructions and Grading Criteria” document in the “Course Information/How You Will Be Evaluated” area for additional information about discussion expectations.
