Signal transduction pathways

You are studying the effects of three new neuropeptide drugs in culture. You find that drug A causes a short-term increase in a K+ current. Drug B causes a short-term increase in a Cl current. Adding drugs A and B together results in a long-term increase in the number of Ca++ channels in addition to the effect that each drug has on its own. Adding drug C results only in a short-term increase in the Na+ current. Assume that each drug affects a different receptor and that no receptor directly binds to more than one drug.

PLEASE DRAW (not just verbally explain) possible signal transduction pathways that could account for the effects of drugs A, B, and C (Note that there are many possible pathways that could work here.)

Method used for the secondary treatment of wastewater

Conventional activated sludge is a common method used for the secondary treatment of wastewater that can remove both carbon and nitrogen from wastewater by switching between oxic (aerobic) and anoxic (anaerobic) conditions. Describe the metabolic processes that are used in conventional activated sludge including the electron donors and acceptors, and the groups of organisms involved.

Improving the sustainability (e.g. reducing energy usage, and recovering resources) of wastewater treatment systems is a current goal. Describe two ways in which the conventional activated sludge system could be adapted to increase its sustainability. Describe the difference between the conventional system and these other processes and explain how they make the process more sustainable, as well as any drawbacks that the alternate system might have.

Models for marketing planning

This question deals with positioning.

a. The course you are completing uses the 5Cs, STP, and 4Ps models for marketing planning.  Discuss “P” – Positioning:   how do companies consider and undertake this aspect of marketing planning (according to the course readings there are four elements of a positioning statement that you should consider here)? That is, what are the 4 components of positioning statements? (Discuss this in the generality and not specifically for Coca-Cola).

b. Now write a positioning statement for Coca-Cola that would be appropriate for its early years. Assume that you are an advisor to Asa Candler who has just taken ownership of the Coca-Cola Company. Note that the positioning statement is not necessarily the “tagline” (the core customer communication of the positioning statement that often appears just beneath the brand name such as “I’m loving it” for McDonald’s) but rather the strategic intent of the company in respect of positioning.  The positioning statement should employ each of the four elements of the positioning statement considered in class and which you discussed in (a) above.  Explain your answer.

c. Based on the positioning statement you have discussed in (b) above, provide a tagline for the Coca-Cola brand (a tagline is not the same as a positioning statement). Your tagline should derive directly from your positioning statement in (b) above. Do not use current taglines but rather develop one that would be appropriate from your positioning statement described in (b) above.

Advantage of the privacy and anonymity

According to the Department of Homeland Security, human “traffickers often take advantage of the privacy and anonymity accessible through the hospitality industry (Department of Homeland Security, n.d., para. 1)”. As hospitality professionals, we must learn to recognize and report possible signs of trafficking. Answer the following questions.

  • What is human trafficking?
    • How does it impact the Hotel Industry?
  • As a hospitality professional, what role do you play in helping to increase human trafficking awareness?
    • Use sources to support your rationale.
  • List five potential human trafficking signs and/or “red flags.”
    • How would you address if faced with any of these signs while working at a hotel?
  • What are some current initiatives taken by companies to increase awareness?

Factors that could influence sex

Sex determination is explained based on different philosophies. In humans, sex is determined based on chromosomes, the X and Y chromosomes. However, unlike humans, the determination of the sex of fish does not depend on the chromosomes. There are several factors that could influence sex. Temperature is a common factor. Certain temperature ranges favor females over males sex and vice versa. These factors could influence sex determination, hence it is very flexible. These factors are said to influence the fate of both somatic and germ cells. In this case, if the group of fish has the same or identical genome but is incubated at varying temperatures, they will have different sexes.

The exceptional communication quality

Gender and Message Meanings: In this discussion, you will explore gender speech patterns as well as gender differences in politeness. Reflect on a time you (or someone you know) were conversing with a friend or loved one when you noticed a positive communication that was an exception to the instrumental/relational gender norm as discussed in DeVito.

Discuss the context and the exceptional communication quality that this communicator demonstrated. What would have been the gender norm? How did this communication outside of gender norms make others feel?  What contextual factors facilitated this positive communication? What are the potential obstacles of either gender as it relates to this communication quality?

The concepts of self-awareness

Identify and explain the concepts of self-awareness, self-esteem, and perception in order to gain a better understanding of each as well as increase your perceptual accuracy.

Instructions:

  1. Review concepts related to self-awareness, including The Four Selves, that you explored in the textbook and in the learning activities.
  2. Consider the fact that an individual’s self-awareness combined with an individual’s perception of a situation often varies and differences in both can influence how a communication interaction transpires.
  3. Reflect on a time when the perception of others — the impression you made — was particularly important (your first date with someone, the first day of college, the first day on a new job, etc.).
  4. What kind of impression did you want to make and why? What did you do to ensure others perceived you how you wanted them to? Were your attempts effective?
  5. Write a two- to three-page paper, not counting the title page and the references page, that describes the event, differences of perception, and defines the concepts of self-awareness and perception.
  6. While including cited terms and concepts is important, the bulk of this paper should be about your own experience.

Suggested structure: Introduction paragraph that includes a main idea, multiple body paragraphs with evidence and support, and conclusion paragraph that wraps it up.

Analyze how culture affects communication

Analyze how culture affects communication by connecting the communication principles you learn to the real world. Consider a recent conversation with a friend, relative, or acquaintance that was in person or electronically. In what ways did your culture and the other person’s culture affect the communication? Use examples of your personal knowledge of culture and communication competence to support your position.

Write a two- to three-page paper, not counting the title page and the references page, that summarizes how culture affected your communication experience. While including cited support for terms and concepts is important, the bulk of this paper should be in your own words about your own experience.
If, for any reason, you are not comfortable discussing your personal cultural background, you can choose communication between two characters from a scene in a movie or television show. How did the culture of the characters affect the communication in that scene?

Arrangement of the resistance vessels

Describe the location and arrangement of the resistance vessels and capillaries in the kidney.  How do these resistances influence the pressure in the arcuate artery; glomerular capillary and peritubular capillary and what % of systemic BP is present in each site?

Assess at least two significant factors that could impact Insomnia, such as biases, beliefs, assumptions, and/or values.

Explain how at least one potential obstacle could interfere with the population’s engagement with Insomnia.
