Preserving and celebrating cultural diversity

Language and literature are vital in expressing culture and perpetuating it across generations. Language encrypts the values and norms of a society Language plays a crucial role in preserving and celebrating cultural diversity.

Every language is a window into a society’s culture, a way of thinking and living. Languages play an essential role in development by ensuring cultural diversity, intercultural dialogue, attaining quality education, strengthening cooperation, building inclusive knowledge societies, and preserving cultural heritage. A specific language reflects the culture of one particular social group. Learning a language entails learning the alphabet, meaning, grammar rules, word arrangement, and the behavior of the society and its cultural customs.

When I was a kid, well-meaning White people would often say “colored people” this had been a progressive them at one point. However, it now appears slightly racist, if not overtly so. Similarly, Oriental was a neutral term, essentially used in the same way that Asian is now. It now sounds hopelessly out of touch and, in some cases, racist, depending on the context. Again, oriental had Levantine connotations; perhaps decades, I haven’t heard this in a long time.

What has essentially changed is the forming and informality of some words. As a result, some words have lost their original meaning and are now referred to as hostile and irrelevant. Technological advancements also contribute to the evolution of some words and their eventual extinction.

Please answer to profesor question. Thank you.

Hello Karine, and thanks for your post. I enjoyed reading it. You made several important points. There is no question about the importance of language and its role in our society. We must understand that our words often speak louder than our actions, and others may take what we say in the wrong content. This can create problems for us, causing others not to want to be associated with us. Everyone must be cognitive of the language they use. Our educational level and personal experiences can also significantly impact how we communicate with others. Without argument, better language and communication skills will improve our relationships and how others treat us.

Excellent, informative, and well-written post.

Karine, any thoughts on how we can get others to understand the importance of language for the betterment of society?
