The cancer stem cell (CSC) theory suggests that cancer stem cells (CSCs) exist within a tumor. CSCs do not proliferate at a high rate, so are not targeted by conventional chemotherapies which target rapidly proliferating cells, and CSCs can replenish a tumor via asymmetric cell divisions.
